Day 38 – The last 1000

Both crews continue to make excellent progress and they’ve both been able to hit a significant milestone. They both now have under 1000nm to go. The ocean will still form their horizon for the future weeks. The main difference for the rowers will be a critical change in what they see during their time on the oars.

The on-deck repeater screen which the rowers look at all the time shows the crew’s speed, bearing and (most importantly) distance to the next waypoint. The distance to the next waypoint has 4 digits which show how far the crew have until their next point. The crews are now starting to point directly towards Barbados. In the past each shift the distance remaining would count down maybe 4 or 5 miles in a 2 hour shift 1131, 1130, 1129, 1128, 1127. Now that they’re under 1000 miles the decimal point appears and the distance counts down in 0.1 of a mile.

This makes it a lot more interesting for the crews who can now celebrate every 0.1nm they get closer to Barbados.
