Day 49 – 7 weeks at sea
After seven weeks at sea our crews have had some incredible experiences over the last 7 weeks at sea. Whales, dolphins, sunrises, sunsets, storms and squalls. Finally it’s fair to say that the crews are now on approach to Barbados. This doesn’t come without it’s own risks. As the sea gets more shallow the waves have a tendency to build up, not necessarily higher but more steep and choppy. This can make for some uncomfortable rowing conditions and crews often slow up as putting power through the oars becomes more difficult.
Ocean’s Elite have even encountered the more treacherous situation when they capsized yesterday morning. A huge wave came at their boat from the side and rolled her upside down. Both crew were on the deck at the time and all hatches and vents were shut but it certainly left everyone rather alert. As soon as we heard about it we passed the news to Rowing Stones who thanked us for the information and noted that they had already had a rather close call a day before. They had been decided to add extra ballast to the boat earlier that day and then had been almost capsized by a wave. Clearly their premonitions of future events are well established.
We can now start to look with excitement towards the arrival of Ocean’s Elite, who are the first team due to land and who we expect to touch Barbados on Monday afternoon / evening (local time).
